When England played the USA during the football World Cup (that's soccer to those Americans amongst you) I might well have put England t-shirts on my offspring and encouraged them to cheer for England. My American husband was not impressed by this, but when you have dual nationality offspring that are growing up with American accents, playing baseball instead of rugby and telling you that you have spelt a word wrong when you use the British spelling, sometimes you feel that you need to tip the balance back a little in your homeland's favour (yes, favour with a 'u'... - it's NOT wrong...).

So when my husband asked if I was also going to make a pillow with some American soldiers on, I said no.
Still, he should just be glad that I am finally getting around to covering the old and tatty pillows that are lying around the house. This one is for my son. I've already thought up another British pillow to go with it, but who knows when I'll get around to making it. .
I've been feeling all mopey so far this year. I'm not sure why, but it is about time that I got over it. I'm thinking that some sewing is in order - along with blatant procrastination of sorting out our tax paperwork...
.
Translation of the day:
UK English: tatty = rather worn out or shabby in US English
Good for you!! I love the British English, favour, colour, and whilst ..
ReplyDeletelove the pillow!
ReplyDeletei've been feeling mopey all year, too. i'm looking forward to spring... hoping that'll be the kick in the pants i need.
There's nothing wrong with flavour and colour or any of the other words that are spelled slightly different. Nothing wrong with those British Army officers on the pillow, either. I keep meaning to make myself a nice Union Jack pillow.
ReplyDeletei love this, and i'm not usually very patriotic at all..i cant' stand union jack prints, but i love these little soldiers! :)
ReplyDeleteI love your cushion( as you and I know a pillow is what you rest your head on at night, but when in Rome and all that!),as to the guardsmen- I notice you haven't commented about their head-gear!!Apparently they are still made of real bearskin! I think they have static problems with fake fur!!
ReplyDeleteThese are adorable. I"m an English ex-pat too, and I'm always trying to sneak some British flavour into the house. You do some really cool things, I enjoy your blog.
ReplyDeletefootball...when it comes to it at world cup (maybe the only time anyway..) my man is portuguese and I am french..that's the only time every four years that I can become quite mad at him !! Stupid, I know...but it's fun too :-)
ReplyDeleteLoooove your cushion !!!!
Hope you have a lovely day !!!!
Good for you Dawn!! Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteI hope you got to see some of the rugby at the weekend! some fantastic games!!
I proudly wore my England jersey and hat for that game, and dressed up our dual citizen daughter in a pretty London dress! (good thing that game was a tie, it could have been an issue at our house!)
ReplyDeleteMy uncle was a queen's guard. I just love your pillows!
British soldiers look so much more interesting! Love the pillows =)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the laugh on so many levels: spelling, cultural, vocabulary, etc.
ReplyDeleteSusana
i think the mopes are going around - it's time for spring, etc.
ReplyDeletei'm all for tipping the scales too. in my house it's tipping the scales in favor of gender (considering i'm the lone female in the group) rather than nationality, but it's the same general idea.
Love those fuzzy hats!
ReplyDeleteI've been rather unmotivated for a few weeks also. It happens every once in a while. But the sewing bug always comes back. :)
Hup, two, three, four - you go! Pillow is insanely good.
ReplyDeleteOh dear... tax documents...
ReplyDeleteWell, procrastinate on! And cheer up, after all you're in California where it's Spring already! Best from icy (not so badly anymore, I will confess) New York.
ugh...you've mentioned the "T" word!! no wonder you're feeling so mopey...i can't believe it's already that time of year again!
ReplyDeletethe dual culture is tough! i could go on and on on that topic...you're handling it well... :)
love the pillow!! you've captured their postures beautifully :)
Just 'found' you! I love your cushion...I use pillows in bed too :o) Keep flying the flag.
ReplyDeleteyou've captured the movement of the legs beautiful. Quite something as I don't think I've ever seen a Beefeater actually move ;o)
ReplyDeleteLovely! And of course, I approve of encouraging the British-ness however you can:) Hope the mopes disappear with the arrival of spring.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Germany with TWO sisters in laws from the States...
ReplyDeleteA wonderful British pillow - I love the soldiers!
And yes keep reminding the American nation about Europe and especially YOUR home country.
The German schools only teach British English. :>
